Barbara Heans
Landscape Artist & STAINED Glass Artisan
Barbara Heans is an accomplished landscape artist and glass artisan whose creative journey spans several decades and mediums. She began painting in oils in 1976 and has continued to evolve her practice, exploring acrylics, historical references, and local scenes that reflect the beauty and character of her surroundings. Her recent acrylic series features symbolic trees—each representing concepts such as Leadership, Hope, and Grace—highlighting her reflective and nature-based approach to art.
Barbara’s artistic curiosity led her to stained glass in 2003, where she learned traditional techniques including glass cutting, foiling, and soldering. She creates detailed stained-glass panels and has recently expanded into glass-on-glass mosaics. Passionate about sharing her craft, she also teaches mosaic-making to others who wish to explore the medium.
Her creativity extends to delicate glass mobiles crafted with driftwood and colourful glass suncatchers. These pieces celebrate the natural elements of Cape Breton—sun, sky, sea, land formations, and the symbols unique to the region—capturing its essence in light-filled, moving form. Whether through paint, stained glass, mosaics, or mobiles, Barbara Heans creates work that honours the landscapes, stories, and natural beauty that inspire her.
