Ask Duane Smith once about his 20 year career in stained glass and he will tell you that he didn't do all that much. However ask him twice and you begin to inch your way closer to the truth about this prolific craftsman. He began his life as a craftsman when he came to the Island of Cape Breton to help his sister, Wendy Smith, run her burgeoning stained glass business. He started small but as the business grew and Wendy became inundated with the task of running a business he began to learn more and more.

His great love of sports taught Duane the importance of being a team player and together he and his sister ran one of the most successful glass businesses the island has ever seen. It will become apparent that stained glass was so much more to him than a mere profession. He will tell you of the great sense of pride behind every cleanly soldered line and the confidence and sense of self worth that his craft has brought him. He may just try and tell you that he is not an artist but in the same breath he will talk of the joy and pride of place that his pieces occupy in homes all over the world.
