MASTER GLASS BLOWER & INSTRUCTOR

In 2015 Mervi found herself on the island of Cape Breton, and not even knowing that she was looking for it, found the place she would call “home”. She was welcomed with open arms and soon she became the permanent studio tech at Glass Artisans Studio and Gallery. Mervi works in a wide variety of mediums from her home in Little River where she is inspired daily by her surroundings and love of the imperfect.

Mervi Haapakoski graduated from the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland where she was told it would take 10 years to blow a perfect bubble. It was while attending Sherridan college in Ontario that she realised she did not need a perfect bubble to make a perfect piece.

Eventually Mervi would develop a signature style that stood out from the uniform minimalistic pieces that Finland was famous for. Mervi’s process became a beautiful balance of control and letting go. She was then accepted as an artist in residence at Harbourfront Centre Glass studio in Toronto where she produced several large scale commissions for private collections, all while staying true to her love of the imperfectly perfect.

Mervi is our teacher in the Glass Blowing Studio and you can join her and other Artist’s In Residence in glass blowing experiences. You can also learn more about Ashes To Glass, where we make a one of a kind tribute to someone special.
